Sue Lynn Tan was able to incorporate not just the legend of chang'e, but the jade emperor and the story of the four dragons as well, making this a tale of epic proportions. i was so impressed by how this story was weaved to encompass elements of my childhood with the romance, adventure, and magic that i revere in a fantasy novel.

i loved everything about dotmg but my favorite part of all was its cast of characters. xingyin, chang'e's daughter, is a phenomenal protagonist. her motivations were so well established and this kept her level-headed, rational, and determined throughout majority of the story. there were parts where she was truly challenged to keep sight of her goals, but these obstacles just reinforced her morals and helped her viewpoint towards concepts such as friendship, family, and love evolve. her personal growth was so wonderful to read about, as this book does take place over the course of several years and involves great distractions and troubles. she becomes such a strong woman by the end and continues to prove how big her heart is.

in addition to xingyin, liwei is so! cute! right off the bat he is introduced as someone who is kind, dependable, and loyal. he is everything xingyin needed at the time of their meeting and i do claim that they are soulmates! he can throw xingyin off balance and ground her in the same breath, challenge her every notion of love and build it right back up. they are twin flames! just as liwei said, their hearts beat to each others.

dotmg reminds me of books such as the poppy war or mistborn in that a portion of it is spent with the characters honing their skills and learning about the magic they harness. this part is always so fun and a great way to introduce the lore of the world. here, it was used to establish the politics of the celestial kingdom, the immortal realm, and exiled nations, as well as to describe the forbidden magic and further incorporate chinese folklore. after xingyin's education was completed, we got to watch her accompany captain wenzhin on multiple missions to takedown mythical beasts. these adventures were epic and so well written. eventually all of our characters get tangled into this massive web of deceit and betrayal that left my jaw on the floor. it was so elaborate and toxic that i was truly blindsided. the plot. exquisite.

in every way that dotmg was magical, it was romantic, witty, and emphasized the importance of family and friendship. i feel like there is so much to be learned from the legend of chang'e and that is highlighted throughout dotmg. this entire book was able to balance the feeling of peace that comes from the security of friendship and family, with the desperation that lies behind losing that security. xingyin experiences a loss of insurmountable proportions but is able to gain a golden opportunity of friendship, love, and power with that loss. she uses this chance to create a future for herself, solely and truly on her own, just as chang'e did to protect herself and her daughter. while there were great sacrifices that had to be made, both xingyin and chang'e learned much about what was important to them in the process and how much they're willing to push to achieve what they knowingly deserve.

this was a beautiful debut novel with such a unique and invigorating concept to match. i am so grateful to have this story and to be able to continue following xingyin's journey in the sequel, heart of the sun warrior. i loved reading this book as a chinese american and having a prior connection to chang'e's story, but you do not need to have that to experience the evocative and heartfelt story that Sue Lynn Tan has written. i also definitely think that this book can be read as a standalone! it covers xingyin's journey thoroughly from start to finish and wraps up in a way that could leave you wanting more, if you so desire it (and luckily we are getting sequel!!). Sue Lynn Tan is a master craftsman and i am so looking forward to reading her future works!

Lilliannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11155628688416923709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819189417298306127.post-2770894938891963182022-03-25T09:00:00.002-04:002022-03-25T09:00:00.148-04:00thoughts i had about people we meet on vacation by emily henry

5/5 Stars

Published May 11th, 2021

Published by Berkley Books

Synopsis: Two best friends. the way certain aspects of a life can be changed to accommodate for the possibility of something greater. hannah and fox are a perfect pair. they bring out the best in each other and their faith one another is so cute. this was a wonderful story for hannah and fox, and a fantastic way to round out the bellinger sisters' story. though i still enjoyed ihos more than hls, this was still a great book as always, considering it's a tessa bailey rom-com. i definitely recommend this duology to anyone looking for a little laughter, butterflies, maybe some tears, and joy.
Lilliannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11155628688416923709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819189417298306127.post-10879032422466722142022-03-13T09:00:00.003-04:002022-03-13T14:53:51.233-04:00vicious by v.e.schwab

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.
Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn't automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.

just gonna start off with saying that this was a very interesting read. i think the most remarkable thing about v.e. schwab is that she is always able to capture the essence of a story really well. from adsom to the invisible life of addie larue, and even including this savage song, her writing remains distinct and characteristic of her style, but shifts to match the mood of the plot and the tone of the character's voices. this is something i can't say i've really experienced from a lot of other authors. i think her stories are always fleshed out and told in elaborately unique ways that separate them all from one another. if there's one thing i can rely on, it's knowing that v.e. schwab will deliver a project with her whole heart attached to it.

despite how much i continue to love v.e. schwab's writing, i just could not get into this one as much as her previous works. the premise of an anti-hero driven story is something i always gobble up cause i find that the complexity behind the character's motivations, hopes, and past is usually alluring. and that was totally the case here. i loved reading about victor vale's time at lockland university, his relationship with eli and how that resulted in their inevitable falling out, and learning more about his time in prison with mitch. but i think some of that need for retribution was lost between the flashback chapters and when it finally came down to getting dirty. it felt anti-climatic. for a book titled vicious, it was quite tame tbh. knowing how much people have hyped up this book, i was a little let down.

in addition to this, i just don't click with some of the themes explored in this book, particularly eli's reliance on religion as the rationale behind what he does. his character development jumped from being a bright college student ambitiously hellbent on discovering the impossible, to an asshole who felt he had received a god-given mission and became a villain overnight. i can understand it in a paradoxical sort of sense, considering eli's character from the start of the novel, but it still felt like a cop-out to create a villain out of the two main characters. it was weird and uncomfy to me.

i appreciate that the ending was kept open for future direction. i really enjoyed sydney's character and think her story is worth exploring more! i am just unsure if i will read venegeful. i'm curious to know many more details about victor's whereabouts, what happened to eli, etc etc but don't think i have the energy to read the sequel because im worried about disappointment again.

regardless, there were some really great things about this book. the characters were fun, the premise of the story was interesting, and i enjoyed the writing a lot. it was just slow and a little anti-climatic, but maybe you can overlook that if you're intrigued by the plot and don't mind slow pacing. i loved learning about their time at lockland university and thought that the first half of the book was so worth reading because of this. their backstories are reminiscent of traditional comic books, adding an element of nostalgia to it all.

p.s. eli is a tool.
Lilliannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11155628688416923709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819189417298306127.post-81052544394839507532022-01-17T09:00:00.028-05:002022-01-17T15:02:06.894-05:00these violent delights/our violent ends caused me emotional distress

Published by Margaret K. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal.

But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

Perfect for fans of The Last Magician and Descendant of the Crane, this heart-stopping debut is an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai, with rival gangs and a monster in the depths of the Huangpu River.

pain. suffering. a couple adjectives that come to mind when i think about this duology. it involves every perfect little nuanced trope that i look for to scratch my never-ending itchy craving for angst. These Violent Delights is a stellar debut novel by Chloe Gong. it is beautifully written and so easily enrapturing i had to physically pry these out of my hands in order to breathe a little bit before i further spiraled into despair. it is an obvious romeo and juliet retelling, but Chloe Gong delivers so much more to that classic tragedy.

These Violent Delights/Our Violent Ends is initially set in 1926 Shanghai, with events leading up to the Shanghai Purge of April 12, 1927. juliette and roma are the heirs to two rival gangs: the scarlet gang and the white flowers. the presence of foreigners is increasing, with nationalist and communist regimes vying for power. in a city rife with growing political tension, what else could put a strain on relations if not a contagion spreading monster? amidst the growing turmoil, juliette and roma must put aside their history and the generations-old feud between their families to find a solution for the madness that runs rampant in Shanghai.

i felt like i was running on hot coals the entire time i was reading this. These Violent Delights sets up the trajectory of the story really well. it starts off with an expected level of animosity between the two gangs, but as the story goes on, the bad blood between the Cais and Montagovs is poked at and ramped up. the one constant throughout it all is the gravity between juliette and roma— they simultaneously ground and alight one another. so many scenes with knives to the throat and guns aimed at each other; threatening to ruin each other one second, then patching each other up the next. trying to count on one hand how many times they went from enemies to lovers and back again is impossible but those little moments of violence and unavoidable trickery just added to their ✨chemistry✨. it also drove the plot in a very logical direction for majority of the story. they had to make very complex decisions that considered the fate of their city, the relationships with their friends and family, and each other's well-being. we were led through chaotic climaxes in both books, with even more earth-shattering, universe-quaking endings that leave you speechless and wondering "what if?" ... and that's what makes this duology so freaking good.

the theme of hope that is littered throughout this duology is explored so delicately, both in how the characters refuse to accept the possibility of a different fate and then finally clutch on to that little shred of hope they had all along. it’s a story that sets an emphasis on determining your own future, no matter how many forces are placed against you. as said in this quote: “they could choose. love or blood. hope or hate.” juliette and roma are constantly tested, time and again, and their love for each other does not falter; if anything it burns brighter through it all. they change the course of their city by trusting each other and learning to have faith in the goodness of one another. watching that unfold was so cathartic. Chloe Gong leaves you to wonder and hope and yearn for more than what's presented to you. she wrote the ending so well and so purposeful to provide us with an opportunity to hope. i have pondered the possibilities that could come of such an open yet closed ending and that alone has kept me so enthralled and obsessed with this story.

i love this cast of characters so much. the white flowers trio (roma, marshall, benedikt) made this story so fun. they were equally ruthless and sweet, witty and rambunctious. overall, such a great trio of boys! i would take a bullet for benmars. the scarlet trio (juliette, kathleen, and rosalind) served us 3 strong female leads, each with different motivations, but all bonded by similar dreams and hopes. juliette's character is one i think can be so relatable for asian american youth who struggle to find a connection between their asian heritage and the expectations of being american. in having similar insecurities and struggles as a chinese american, i found comfort in sharing these sentiments with juliette. in more recent years i've been able to see pieces of my own story depicted in fiction and i'll never stop being grateful to have these characters and stories.

"The qipao. The scarlet gangsters had become accustomed to shortcutting their associations of her to glittery, beaded dresses and pomade in her finger-curled hair. As soon as she dressed in Chinese clothing instead, they saw right past her.

Juliette breathed in and found her lungs to be horribly tight. Could she never be both? Was she doomed to choose one country or the other? Be an American girl or nothing?"

this series is so beautiful. the writing, the character development, the overall progression of the story ... it is so well crafted. you can tell how much care was put into the research of Shanghai during the roaring 20s and how dedicated Chloe Gong was to creating a romeo & juliet retelling that was fresh, relatable, and exciting. i am so pleased by everything about this duology, even if i cried for an hour after finishing and have spent the last couple weeks brooding. i am content and there is no better feeling than that acceptance. Chloe Gong, you are a genius, and i cannot wait to watch your writing evolve. not to mention that her next project, Foul Lady Fortune, is dubbed as "a speculative historical noir surrounding the events of Imperial Japan's expansion into China in the 1930s. A familiar character is recruited as a national spy, maintaining her false identity by posing as a young married couple with someone who might be the very enemy." ... are you joking. [weeping] nothing like the appearance of your favorite characters [wink wink sobbing]. im so glad to have books like These Violent Delights/Our Violent Ends that explore themes of hope, self-identity, acceptance, and morality alongside a can of ass kicking + stabbing. the duality of a series! you must check them out expeditiously.

Lilliannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11155628688416923709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819189417298306127.post-62452425600449830282022-01-01T12:26:00.006-05:002022-01-01T13:35:44.694-05:002021 wrap-up

we did it folks. we made it through another impossible year. i hope that you all were able to make the most of it despite the obvious state of the planet rn. reflecting back on it, i think i accomplished quite a bit. i started my first job, got accepted into northwestern for grad school, moved all the way to chicago and revamped my life a little bit. things during the last quarter of 2021 were really swell for me. i made a lot of great new friends out of my classmates, was able to reconnect with old ones, and i feel more sure of my future now than i did before. overall, a good year!!

in terms of reading, this was much better than previous years and that’s mainly because i was out of school and able to read on the job (don’t tell anyone). i think this year my taste in books has evolved a lot, as i’ve been seeking out more new adult or adult fiction. i still love a ya, but there’s a whole new world of stories to discover in na/adult and i’ve been having a hell of a time discovering that!! to recap the last year of reading i’ve had, i’m using the end of the year book survey created by Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner.
wishing you all a great new year ahead of you! all book titles link to their respective goodreads page! cheers to 2022 and here’s to hoping i keep up with my reading again!! let me know if we have any picks in common or if you have any recs you think i’d enjoy!

2021 reading stats
number of books read: 34!
number of re-reads: 1 (the deal, pls don’t look at me i re-read this like once a month)

genre you read the most from: fantasy and romance

best book you read in 2021?
i’ll choose one fantasy and one romance for y’all, since that’s all i read this year: The Dragon Republic by R.F. The public radio setting added such an interesting dynamic to the story. I enjoyed the behind the scene tidbits that gave us an inside look into how public radio may work in real life and these challenges really added to the characterization of our main cast. Reading about these two enemies turned fake exes turned lovers navigate this fabricated story to keep their jobs and radio station alive was something I grew so invested in. The Ex Talk is able to simultaneously tackle concepts of grief and vulnerability, love and longing, while creating an atmosphere that is so electrifying. Rachel Lynn Soloman's adult romance debut will make you feel seen in the characters she's crafted and has created a space that allows you to lose yourself in the simplest of joys.

Shay has been working hard as a producer for Pacific Public Radio for 10 years, but craves to be her own radio show host. After dreaming of this for years due to the influence of her father, she finally gets the chance to make an impact on national radio. Shay does not give up. She is unrelenting, guiding herself and her team to the victory she knows they all deserve, and she is so efficient at what she does that this dream of hers becomes a reality. Dominic starts off as such a pompous jerk, constantly showing off his masters degree in journalism to prove he knows what he's doing in the realm of public radio. As the story unfolds, it turns out Dominic is actually shy, sweet, and is merely striving to impress his office enemy turned fake ex turned co-host. He becomes such a joyous little light in the end. Their pairing as co-hosts is genius. They have such a great chemistry that makes for witty banter and intriguing discussions. Dominic and Shay really bring out the best in each other, both on air and off.

One of my favorite aspects about The Ex Talk was the diversity in its cast of characters. Dominic being Korean was so pleasantly surprising. I appreciated having even just a little bit of Korean culture mentioned in the story and the addition of his parents and their background to give Dominic a cultural identity to relate to, as opposed to him just being a token character. I really like how Soloman handled Shay's age. Shay is 29 and Dominic is 24, so there's an age gap and the female protagonist is older! I feel like this is rarely written about in novels, so it was refreshing to see this type of relationship as well as read about a character who was not all consumed by their age. Shay and Dominic were able to make jokes about their "generational differences" (they're literally in the same generation) and still form a great connection with one another. There are other details mentioned in the story that aren't necessarily expanded on during the book, such as Shay being Jewish, Ameena (Shay's best friend) being Indian, and two of their coworkers being openly LGBT and sharing tidbits of their past, but it still made way for more diversity than is normally seen in other romance novels.

In addition to this, I truly felt comforted by Shay's character and how she went about her internal conflicts. After what I would consider the climax of the story, she really struggles with accepting her position in life. She is unsure of the path she wants to take next, uncertain about whether she's been chasing her dream this whole time or just striving to attain the illusion of happiness that her father set for her. At this crossroad, she is challenged to figure out her desires. After graduating from UF, I have felt this constant pressure to figure out what I want to do with my career as fast as I can. It has been a struggle to come to terms with the fact that everybody takes this journey at their own pace, but Shay's character really helped me put into perspective that even at 29, there's still time for you to figure things out. Throughout the book, she makes comments about how despite buying her own house and doing all these things that "adults" should do, she still hasn't figured everything out. Hearing that, I was able to put my own worries to rest for the time being.

The Ex Talk is more than your typical rom-com. It's fun, heart-wrenching, and a little messy at times <strike>(aren't we all)</strike>, but it can be so personal in just the right ways. I loved this book and I truly recommend it if you're looking for a quick read and immediate serotonin release. Did I mention I read it in 6 hours? It is unputdownable. I hope this makes way for a whole line of books set in the world of radio and podcast.

Lilliannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11155628688416923709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819189417298306127.post-39463109705031598192021-02-01T08:00:00.002-05:002021-02-01T08:00:02.391-05:00Jade City by Fonda Lee

4/5 Stars

Published by Orbit

Published June 26th, 2018

Synopsis: The Kaul family is one of two crime syndicates that control the island of Kekon. Her ability to craft a world so rich in detail and culture is one of the main reasons why I enjoyed this book so much. From complex family dynamics to political strife, Fonda Lee is able to explore themes of love and power through the Kaul family and their homeland of Kekon. The imaginative descriptions of Kekon's history, as well as a few chapters containing Kekonese myth and legend, made the story so immersive and fun to read about. There are clashes between clans, a land rife with magic, and a social hierarchy that beckons to be changed. After hearing so many positive things, I finally gave in to the recommendation, and I firmly believe that Fonda Lee has the makings of one of the best adult fantasy series around.

World building is such an important aspect of fantasy novels, but it can't carry a story all on its own. In this case, the world perfectly complements the story. I think the concept of jade inducing powers in humans is such a unique idea and Fonda Lee uses this to her advantage by creating a captivating storyline. There is a lot of tension between jade users and non-jade users, with the latter always scheming up ways to claim jade as their own. In conjunction with growing demands from a rival clan, the members of No Peak are engaged in battle for a good portion of the story. Jade City reminds me of a mafia au with high stake thievery, secret missions, and a lot of deadly fighting over drugs and jade. Fonda Lee is great at painting a picture, especially when it comes to a fight. The attention to detail makes everything so lively and epic.

Plus, I love the Kaul family. Lan, the ruler of the No Peak clan, is unwavering in his loyalty to this family. He leads his clan through the possibility of war and remains thoughtful and clearheaded, which makes him such an interesting character when the inevitable chaos ensues. Hilo is the Horn of No Peak clan, which basically means he is second in command. He is eager to protect those around him, is always ready to pick a fight, and overall, he carried this whole book on his back. Shae is an intelligent woman who does not rely on the skills of others. She is one of my favorite characters because her complex history with her family leads to an important journey of self-reflection. Anden is the shyest little thing and his soft-spoken personality was a breath of fresh air amongst the intensity of the plot. All four of these characters contribute something different to the plot. Whether it be as a formidable leader or a talented fighter, they lead the story with purpose and quickly draw you in.

Jade City is the first fantasy adult novel I've read and I must say it sets the standard for all others pretty dang high. When you think the story couldn't get more intense, Fonda Lee is 10 steps ahead of you, ramping up the adrenaline. She has the ability to persuade you into thinking everything is alright, then absolutely shatter your mind. While I would label this as an action-heavy book, there is some romance and at times the dialogue can be witty and playful, which makes way for some lightheartedness in the midst of utter chaos. After the way book 1 ended, I am so excited to read Jade War. Fonda Lee has set the stage for the involvement of foreign countries in Kekon affairs, more criminal activity in the fight for power, and an all-out war over the production of jade. I hope to see all of this and more in the sequel.

Lilliannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11155628688416923709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819189417298306127.post-54563820382312792132021-01-25T08:00:00.004-05:002021-01-25T08:00:00.512-05:00i bet you thought you'd seen the last of me Surprise, everybody.

It's been quite a bit of time since I last put my words to use on this blog, but I've finally gained some shred of inspiration that has pushed me to pursue this thing again. This allotted me the information needed to write a 39 page senior Honors thesis, which, at this point, still stands as the best and smartest work I've ever produced. My passion for dance pushed me to continue evolving as an artist, so I became a tap choreographer for my dance company, creating several pieces that allowed me to express a side of me I never knew I could. Now, I am back home and taking a year (or two) off before I apply to grad school for my Masters in Genetic Counseling.

Now, some of you (maybe a couple) may have noticed that I am no longer blogging under the name Little Lillie Reads, but rather Literary Ligase. Correct! I am rebranding and attempting to start something that could serve a dual purpose. I want to continue reviewing books and dishing out content that readers enjoy, but I also really want to start documenting my grad school journey on a more public forum. With genetic counseling being a relatively obscure career, I want to use my platform to raise awareness for the field and reach out to potential patients, applicants, or students who may have questions. By writing about my application process, my future experiences in grad school, and using Literary Ligase a means of advocacy and self-reflection, I hope to provide readers with an informative space and inspire folks along the way!

To explain why I chose Literary Ligase as my new blog name: I really like alliteration. But also, I thought the two words paired together perfectly. Literary, which refers to content of literature, and ligase, an enzyme that essentially connects two DNA strands together. Here on Literary Ligase I want to ... connect you to future reads ... but I also want to ... connect you to my personal experiences as a GC applicant/student. Catch my drift? To be quite honest, the two terms may not even make sense together on a grammatical standpoint, but I went to school for microbiology and using ligase in the blog title felt really genius to me.

I am really excited to get back into the swing of things! Little Lillie Reads was always a place of comfort for me and I'm optimistic about the things this blog can now accomplish as Literary Ligase. I missed you all so much! Please look forward to what I have in store!

Lilliannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11155628688416923709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819189417298306127.post-4406177107113086332018-06-09T07:00:00.000-04:002020-12-09T14:57:20.196-05:00Flame in the Mist by Reneé Ahdieh

Being that this is the first book by Renée Ahdieh, a beloved author by the book community, that I have read, I definitely held it to high standards. After hearing for months that it was a dubbed a Mulan retelling, I held it to even higher standards. Unfortunately, I felt like I got the shorter end of both sticks and ended up jinxing it for myself. Flame in the Mist was far from the Mulan retelling I was expecting and in a way that let me down. It is a good story on its own, so long as you overlook the comparison to Mulan. I think this story definitely has room to grow in the sequel and I look forward to picking it up, especially because I craved so much more out of this one. I am highly impressed by Renée's sense of world building and attention to detail, as well as her incorporation of the Japanese culture (though I am unsure of whether it was represented 100% accurately or appropriately). This was an interesting book from start to finish, with quite a bit of loose ends left out in the open to be answered in the sequel, which is definitely what pushed me to finish this one in time for its release.

For starters, I would really like to address the characters in this book. I had a great time uncovering the secrets of the Black Clan and getting to know its members, and found that this was the most intriguing part of the entire book. From Yoshi to Ren, Okami and Ranmaru, I felt that there was this sense of brotherhood between each of them that made me fond of even the most frustrating of characters. You start off expecting these boys to be nasty and rude, you learn to hate them, but then the development of the story reveals secrets you wouldn't expect right off the bat, which in turn defrosts the ice in your heart and allows you to grow quite fond of them.

Mariko, on the other hand, was not as exciting for me. I admire her strength and resilience, and could only hope to find that much fire and drive in myself one day. However, I sometimes felt like her character was going around in circles. She's absolutely brilliant, resourceful, knows how to use her own skills to her advantage, but at the same time I needed someone to just nudge her forward so she could get a move on in this plot. One thing that I will say was excellently done was this power to all women vibe that took place throughout the story. You see strength not only in Mariko, who has to overcome a lot within the first 50 pages, but also in Yumi, a geiko who speaks valiantly about the power women possess despite living in a man's world. This message that resonated throughout the entirety of Flame in the Mist made it memorable for me.

One aspect of the book that I really had to question was the romance. It was so abruptly introduced in such a strange and forced way, that I felt like it was all dealt with hastily. If I completely ignore the context of the story then great, I love me a hate-to-love trope, but I cannot for the life of me understand why this romance had to be introduced in the first book, if it even had to be introduced at all. I ultimately think that this pairing will probably work out fine in the next book, but for as of right now it was uncomfortably placed.

Overall, I felt that Flame in the Mist was an incredibly immersive story that featured exquisite visualizations of Japanese culture. It was this part of the story that kept me so intrigued and glued to the page, because Renée Ahdieh knows exactly how to write out the important details that allow you to submerge yourself into a new world. Though there were some aspects of the story that had me questioning whether I should move forward, I am ultimately glad that I ended up finishing this book. Renée gave herself a beautiful setting for an even stronger plot in the second novel. I am hoping to see Mariko grow into an even more powerful woman, as well as find the answers to these pressing questions I have about literally everything.

Synopsis: Following the grief and horror of her discovery of Jack the Ripper's true identity, Audrey Rose Wadsworth has no choice but to flee London and its memories.

After what seems like years without reading, I decided to pick this one up for a quick and enthralling read, and boy was it the right choice. Stalking Jack the Ripper was one of my favorite reads of 2017 and I just knew Hunting Prince Dracula would be right up my alley. In middle school I recall reading about Vlad the Impaler for fun in history class, thinking his story was certainly disturbing, yet incredibly fascinating. What I never expected was for his gruesome legacy to be taken to the pages of a YA novel in such an engaging and fun way. Maniscalco takes Prince Dracula's entire being and plays with his characterization like putty, crafting him into this figure that instills fear into the audience with even the slightest mention of his name. Obviously you should be scared of him from just the implication of his name, but Maniscalco was able to rewrite this story in such a way that made it so much more than the historical facts we know about Vlad the Impaler already.

One of my favorite things about this book is the writing. Kerri Maniscalco has to be one of the best writers of this day and age. Her ability to craft characters whose personas are so distinguishable from one another and establish a story line that flows consistently without discrepancies in the time frame, plot, etc.. makes the story that much more intriguing and enhances the readability. Maniscalco is able to write astounding imagery and characterizations that are so distinct from anything I've read before, which makes her already one of my favorite authors. I read this one nonstop for two days and could not put it down without craving more. Hunting Prince Dracula has just the right amount of mystery and angst that makes it literally addicting. Plus, the setting of the story sounds beautifully ghastly, with the main location being Bran Castle, also known as Dracula Castle. As if the name alone doesn't set your nerves aflame, imagine studying the art of forensics in Vlad the Impaler's home while Vlad the Impaler is supposedly running rampant around the town.

I love the cast of characters in this book. Audrey Rose's perspective is a blast to read from considering she's a badass, fearless, genius forensics student. She has zero tolerance for anybody that undermines her and tells it like it is. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her character grow from the SJTR to HPD, as she ultimately becomes a more resilient person following the aftermath of the first book. She was able to take what she felt like were her personal weaknesses and turn them upside down on their heads, developing into somebody who finds strength in the darkest of moments. Along with Audrey Rose, Thomas Cresswell remains as irritatingly charming as ever. His knack for comic relief is truly unparalleled. Cresswell is honestly a character I admire for his optimism and outgoing personality, but also for his ability to retain a state of privacy and confidentiality. He is a multifaceted character that drives the story forward as more secrets emerge and pieces of the puzzle slowly fall into place. Besides these two, I thought the inclusion of characters like Daciana and Ileana really brought more life to the story that was not present in the first book.

Overall, I thought Hunting Prince Dracula was executed brilliantly and brought the story of Vlad the Impaler to life in a way never seen before. It featured epic, adrenaline infused, action-packed mystery that left me wanting to pack up my things and become a forensic scientist myself. This series is absolutely fantastic, unique, and gets my heart racing at the mere thought of what is to come in the future installments. The stories are getting darker, more haunting, and just straight up powerful in its own right. Kerri Maniscalco has been writing bangers and I just cannot wait to see what she brings to the table next. I am thankful for the rare book that has me paranoid at 3 in the morning about what is behind my closet door -- HPD is exactly that rare occurrence.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. The Epic Crush of Genie Lo is exactly what you would expect it to be - EPIC. Everything about the storytelling is exquisite, creative, and genius. You find yourself immediately attracted to the easy flowing syntax, the meaning behind the mayhem, and the uniqueness of the story. This is one of the first books I have ever seen myself so distinctly represented in. The Chinese legend Journey to the West and the Monkey King is what serves as inspiration to this wonderfully made story. This is a legend I have known since I was a child and one that I have grown up reading, watching, and listening to. It is a legend I could never have imagined would become a YA novel, but F.C. Yee made it happen, and I am incredibly thankful to have it. The Epic Crush of Genie Lo is the spunky, modern twist of the Chinese classic, and brings forward a courageous, rebellious plot that leaves you wanting more. It is refreshing to see Chinese folklore hit the bookshelves in such an impactful way.

Genie Lo is freaking hilarious. She is quick witted, sarcastic, and not afraid to speak her mind. She challenges the stereotypical standards society holds Asians to by proving that we can be bold, athletic, and unapologetically tough. Genie Lo is competitive, angsty/stressful, but that's what makes her so relatable. She is 110% reminiscent of the person I was (and still am) back in junior year of high school, when all I did was prepare for college applications and study. With the two of us both being Chinese-American, there's an already established connection between us in terms of heritage and culture, plus learning to adapt to that double narrative of Chinese expectations, but growing up surrounded by American culture. There is so much more beneath the surface of our ethnicities that we both struggled with and worked towards, that made this story all the more real for me. Genie is trying to find her place in this world, which is all anybody ever wants to accomplish. This is a character I one hundred percent see myself reflected in and I could not be more thankful to have finally found that.

In addition to Genie Lo, who I absolutely adore, Quentin Sun is a blast of a character. He's sunshine incarnate, which is fitting considering his last name, compassionate and caring, and as funny as they come. He has an incredibly strong character, a moral compass that is A+, and a brave, defiant nature that seeks to protect those around him, while causing a little chaos (because who can resist??). Together, Genie Lo and Quentin Sun make a tag team that is unbelievably good. They kick ass in the best way possible, are comically brilliant, and have a dynamic that just naturally clicks. They're literally just two teenagers that are fighting demon ass in the Bay Area. As the story unfolded I thought "how on earth could he make a romance work right now?" but it was so innocent and surprisingly fitting, and now I can't imagine the story without this cute romance.

The Epic Crush of Genie Lo defies all standards for a typical YA novel. It features realistic characterization that is incredibly personal and relatable, a tall girl/short boy pairing, and Chinese folklore that is so interesting and fun. The plot is ingenious, incorporating elements that are nostalgic of the original classical, yet completely reimagined and made into a witty and captivating sequence of events. The battle scenes were thought out and executed well; action-packed, kick ass, and representative of their good graces. Genie Lo has a healthy relationship with both of her parents, a feature I think is important to emphasize, since it is so rare to find. There is an underlying theme of loyalty, to oneself and to those around you, and determination that pushes this story forward and develops its morality. This is the book that I have been waiting for - a representation of my childhood that continuously influences who I am today. This is a book I will cherish for years to come, because it brought me an image of myself that I thought I would never find in books.

Synopsis: Jason Zhou survives in a divided society where the elite use their wealth to buy longer lives. The rich wear special suits that protect them from the pollution and viruses that plague the city, while those without suffer illness and early deaths. Frustrated by his city’s corruption and still grieving the loss of his mother, who died as a result of it, Zhou is determined to change things, no matter the cost.

With the help of his friends, Zhou infiltrates the lives of the wealthy in hopes of destroying the international Jin Corporation from within. Jin Corp not only manufactures the special suits the rich rely on, but they may also be manufacturing the pollution that makes them necessary.

Yet the deeper Zhou delves into this new world of excess and wealth, the more muddled his plans become. And against his better judgment, Zhou finds himself falling for Daiyu, the daughter of Jin Corp’s CEO. Can Zhou save his city without compromising who he is or destroying his own heart?
Want is an absolutely stunning novel. Cindy Pon has crafted a world that is completely unique and unlike anything I have ever read before. This future-esque reimagining of Taiwan, in which the air pollution takes a terrible toll on the people of its city, is creative and hard-hitting, and does not stray far from environmental issues that affect us everyday. This is the first novel I have read by Cindy Pon and I have absolutely no idea why I didn't pick up her books sooner. I have followed Cindy Pon on social media for the longest time and I have watched her be an advocate of and influencer for Asian representation in YA novels. She has changed the game in so many ways and I am forever grateful for her contribution to this community. She has impeccable craftsmanship, rolling out a plot that will keep you not only connected to the story, but subliminally relating the context back to relevant issues in real life. Want is everything I needed in a novel at the time, becoming a book that I will push onto my friends and family for years to come. It is culturally immersive, includes a myriad of diverse characters, and applicable to situations that are happening around the world, which is what makes it such a universal read.

This has one of my favorite cast of characters ever. Individually, they are all powerhouses and bring forward an amazing collection of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and stories (Taiwanese, Chinese, Indian, and Filipino rep!!). These characters are all complex, each with their own set of personal problems that leave them far from transparent. Jason Zhou is not your stereotypical main character. He is not driven by glory, power, or money - rather, he simply just wants to save his city, his friends, and his people. Zhou and the crew wants to see an end to this corrupt technological empire that has ravished their home, and will seek by all means a way to take it down. Iris, Lingyi, Arun, and Victor are all admirable characters whom I will cherish for the rest of eternity. Lingyi is a hacker - a damn good one - and is the mastermind behind this whole thing. Iris is literally a warrior of the night and shadows; you would never see her coming. These two make my heart swell with love and flood with happiness, but I also know that they are both completely capable of kicking my ass. Arun is my favorite little scientist, while Victor is socially skilled enjoys his luxuries. The crew's dynamic is incredible, bringing a force upon Taipei that the city was not ready for. Along with them, Daiyu is a strong and fierce woman who impressed me right off the bat. I am here for powerful and passionate characters, which is exactly what Cindy Pon introduces to us.

I truly appreciate the plot of this story and its hidden messages. Everything about Want is completely relevant and a topic of discussion that we should not shy away from. It deals with environmental concerns, economic instability, and zealous, money-hungry leaders. This book will spur conversation, turn heads, and introduce people to topics that are sometimes overlooked. Besides its importance in both social issues and representation, Want is also just a really good book. The plot is thrilling, throwing you into stressful situations that involve rock climbing, flying motorbikes, and lots of tip-toey sneaking around. This is perfect for anybody that just wants to see a group of Asian characters be a free spirited, dangerous band of misfits. I don't think I have ever related to a group of characters more than I do these ones. I see parts of myself in Lingyi and Daiyu, in the cultural narrative of the story, and even more so in the overall moral of the book. This is a story that teaches us to acknowledge and fight issues, and to persevere through even the darkest of moments. I have no doubt in my mind that Ruse (Want #2) will continue to teach us lessons and inspire audiences.Lilliannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11155628688416923709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1819189417298306127.post-46971736783808167152017-05-12T07:00:00.001-04:002020-12-09T14:32:50.630-05:00#ReadADessen: Lock & Key + GIVEAWAY!

I really enjoyed this one! I definitely have a feel for Sarah Dessen books now and what they're all about, and cannot wait to indulge the rest of her stories. She has a strong preference for stories that deal with friendship and romance, while also handling serious issues. Her books are meant to show what it's like to grow up and adapt to certain situations, to discover yourself and dare to take risks. I think Sarah Dessen books are perfect summertime reads! With that, I want to share with all of you some of my favorite summertime jams that include some new songs plus some oldies, but goodies, paired with my favorite quotes from the book.

“It's a lot easier to be lost than found. It's the reason we're always searching and rarely discovered--so many locks not enough keys.”

“I always tried to imagine what it would be like to open your door to find something you had given up on. Maybe it had seen places you never had, been rerouted and passed through so many strange hands, but still somehow found its way back to you, all before the day even began. ”

“We all have one idea of what the color blue is, but pressed to describe it specifically, there are so many ways: the ocean, lapis lazuli, the sky, someone's eyes. Our definitions are as different as we are ourselves.”

Synopsis: Isobel is a prodigy portrait artist with a dangerous set of clients: the sinister fair folk, immortal creatures who cannot bake bread, weave cloth, or put a pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobel’s paintings are highly prized among them. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn prince—she makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes – a weakness that could cost him his life.

Furious and devastated, Rook spirits her away to the autumnlands to stand trial for her crime. Waylaid by the Wild Hunt’s ghostly hounds, the tainted influence of the Alder King, and hideous monsters risen from barrow mounds, Isobel and Rook depend on one another for survival. Their alliance blossoms into trust, then love, violating the fair folks’ ruthless Good Law. There's only one way to save both their lives, Isobel must drink from the Green Well, whose water will transform her into a fair one—at the cost of her Craft, for immortality is as stagnant as it is timeless.

Isobel has a choice: she can sacrifice her art for a future, or arm herself with paint and canvas against the ancient power of the fairy courts. Because secretly, her Craft represents a threat the fair folk have never faced in all the millennia of their unchanging lives: for the first time, her portraits have the power to make them feel.

Wowza, I am so intrigued with this book and by the premise of the story. It sounds so interesting to have a set of individuals who cannot perform basic human crafts, such as writing on paper or baking a cake, and for them to actually have a craving for this sort of thing. For starters, I love anything that deals with the fair folk, so I already dig it. Second, I love that our main character is an artist. Third, I freaking love the idea of her being able to control the fair folk's emotions. This sounds like an enemies to lovers sort of book (which is my favorite trope), so I'm ready to see how the dynamics between these two characters pan out. Also, the cover for this book is absolutely stunning and is what immediately drew me in.

Synopsis: Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.

So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.

Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

This Beauty and the Beast retelling knocked my socks off. The only other book I have read that is co-written by Meagan Spooner is These Broken Stars, which I had a very difficult time getting into. Hunted was the exact opposite for me - I could not put it down. Meagan Spooner's writing is pure eloquence and sophistication. The detailing is so vivid and life-like, the scenes unfurling around you like a boat's sail. It is haunting and mysterious, yet full of innocence, power, and elegance amongst the slightest touch of the darkest themes. I thought Spooner's twist on this classic tale was executed excellently and is by far one of the best Beauty and the Beast retellings on the market. Not only is this one of the best books I've read this year, but it has me even more excited for Unearthed which comes out in 2018!

My favorite aspects of Hunted are the characters and the storytelling. Meagan Spooner is amazing at delivering a story and its subplots at precisely the right moment. She leaves you guessing and wondering what is yet to come, keeping you on the edge of your seat from the moment Yeva enters the forest. From there on out it is nothing but arrow slinging, beast hunting, magical mayhem that is overall so perfect you get lost in the plot. Hunted is told through both Yeva's and the Beast's point of view, giving us insight through a character driven by revenge and through a character compelled by magic and undergoing its course. The difference in the tone of each character's voice is a great addition to the story, as it really shows the affects of the plot through different point of views. Meagan Spooner was able to weave together a story that balanced magic, romance, and suspense.

I adore this cast of characters and especially our protagonist Yeva. Yeva is a ball of fire - strong, feisty, level-headed, and independent. She is such a natural born leader and it shows when she goes hunting for the beast, searching for her father, and finding the true magic of the forest. Meagan Spooner crafted a character that absolutely commands the page. It is inspiring to see such a driven female protagonist take the initiative to save and avenge her family, while also striving to rescue herself. In addition to Yeva, I thought the Beast was very well written. We know from the classic tale that the Beast is cursed and that is definitely shown through the pained and tortured dialogue provided from his point of view. He is precisely as his name insinuates, - fearsome and formidable - but underneath that hardened exterior, we all know there is a heart of gold that beats underneath. While the dynamic between these two was well established, I especially loved the relationship between Yeva and her sisters and between Yeva and her dog Doe-Eyes. This added a strong sense of familial loyalty that was beautiful to read about.

All in all, Hunted was an intense, graceful read that is not to be overlooked. Meagan Spooner did an excellent job in reworking the original Beauty and the Beast tale by adding her own flavor to the mix. From the magical expanses to the intricately detailed writing, Hunted takes you on a journey through the heart of the Beast's valley and into the mind of the Beast himself.

The Truth About Forever!*

The Truth About Forever is the first Sarah Dessen book I have ever read (I knoooow - where have I been) and I must say, Sarah Dessen has a wonderful writing style. What I love the most about her writing style is the fact that she paints a vivid picture. The detail in everything is so intricate and planned out, that I couldn't help but get lost in it. There is a lot about this book, and others I presume, that is incredibly relatable and realistic - she writes about a lot of important issues and does so really well. While The Truth About Forever deals heavily with loss and the grief that comes after, friendship plays a large part in the story. It is through the establishment of these friendships that our main character is able to break free from her controlled life and find herself. Although romance is part of the plot line, it is such a slow progression from the day Macy and Wes meet, to the day they become friends, to the day they realize they're wonderful together. This is a story of self realization, the overcoming of loss, and the determination to save what you believe in.

The characters in this book were so much fun to read about. While Macy was quite the character to read about, I especially loved the Wish Catering crew and felt that each member added a different dynamic to the story. After the passing of her father, Macy is reclusive and afraid to break away from her shell. She's studious, organized, and not one for surprises. However, the most beautiful parts of the story were when Macy found herself in a sticky situation, because it brought her out of her comfort zone and into the welcoming arms of the Wish Catering crew. Here we find Kristy, Monica, Bert, Delia, and Wes. Kristy is the best friend you hope to find, Monica is the one who is always there, Bert is comedic relief, Delia is kind hearted, and Wes is obviously sa-woon. I thought the friendships between all the characters were light-hearted, supportive, and real. The relationship between Wes and Macy is soooo sweet - I loved that we were able to really watch the relationship blossom and overcome its obstacles.

Now, I'd like to share with all of you my top three favorite quotes from The Truth About Forever:

"There is never a time or place for true love. It happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single flashing, throbbing moment.”

“Grief can be a burden, but also an anchor. You get used to the weight, how it holds you in place.”

“The choices you make now, the people you surround yourself with, they all have the potential to affect your life, even who you are, forever.”

Lucy Keating immediately impressed me with her debut novel Dreamology, coming onto the scene with a fresh voice, creative storytelling, and immersive writing. With Dreamology being one of my favorite contemporary novels ever, I knew I was in for a treat when she announced Literally. This book is so unlike anything I have ever read before. Lucy Keating has a unique writing style that I adore. It is simplistic, but commands the page. She has an excellent way of setting an elaborate scene and keeping you involved in the atmosphere. Just as the synopsis says, Lucy Keating is able to blur the line between reality and fiction, creating an intriguing storyline that has you really feeling for the characters and getting caught between what is real and what is fiction. Once again, Lucy Keating has stunned me with her writing.

The most exciting thing about this book is that you are able to physically detach the characters from their storyline and understand them through the fictional Lucy Keating's perspective. Throughout Literally we follow Annabelle, the main character of fictional Lucy's upcoming novel. Annabelle is snarky, incredibly organized and hard-headed, but relatable in a naive, sweet sort of sense. As her life unravels from the inside out, she soon realizes that fictional Lucy Keating has been planning out her life all along - the unseen misfortunes, her friends, the cute boy who magically appears in school. Instead of allowing this to stop her from living, Annabelle decides for herself that it is up to her to write her own story. Along with Annabelle comes Will Hale, aka the new boy in school, who is supposed to be the dreamiest, most perfect boy for Anna. However, I must say that Elliot, her brother's best friend, has him beat. This love triangle, for the most part, was a little unkempt. I believe within the first few chapters Anna and Elliot have a little moment, but then fictional Lucy Keating introduces Will for her own professional gain (as she is writing Annabelle's life for her, ya know). I understand that this supports the claim of fictional Lucy basically rewriting AB's life for her and by all means the two romances are incredibly fluffy and cute, but I thought the exposition of this love triangle could have been better.

The primary reason as to why this book hit it off with me so well, is that I read it during a time where I was unsure of what I wanted to pursue in life. Annabelle is going through an extensive internal and external problem where everything she knew is being flipped upside down on her head. She's lost, alone, unsure of what is coming next or if she's going to lose the life that she knows. Instead of letting all these situations get to her, she makes the ultimate decision in the end that no one is allowed to take charge of her life except for herself. To me, during my little existential crisis, this meant a lot. I realized how important it is to make decisions about my future and my story on my own. While Literally is an incredibly light, cute contemporary romance, it teaches you the importance of writing your story. Fictional Lucy Keating made all these decisions for the Annabelle and the people in her life, but quite a bit of them were able to fight against the urges and rewrite what was already plotted out.

If you are ever in the mood for sweet contemporary romance that is a quick read, this is the perfect book for you. The premise for the plot is so interesting and if that synopsis didn't lure you in, then I am here to tell you that you need to read this book. It was a lot of fun to read, brought me tons of happiness, and even made me chuckle. With the creativity, imagination, and talent Lucy Keating has, I cannot wait to see what she conjures up for us next.
Synopsis: Jason Zhou survives in a divided society where the elite use their wealth to buy longer lives. The rich wear special suits, protecting them from the pollution and viruses that plague the city, while those without suffer illness and early deaths.

Can Zhou save his city without compromising who he is, or destroying his own heart?

This futuristic read sounds like the perfect book that is appealing to everyone. With a fast paced plot, Asian MC, and corrupt society polluted by the wealthy elite, Cindy Pon sets us up for an immaculately cultivated adventure set in Taipei, Taiwan. 2017 seems like the year for an increase in diverse YA novels and I have honestly never felt more happy about a lineup of releases. I've been waiting for a very long time to see myself portrayed in YA novels as a heroine and with the amount of books written by Asian authors and featuring Asian casts, (Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, A Line in the Dark, Warcross, When Dimple Met Rishi, American Panda, The Bone Witch, etc etc.) I feel like we're getting closer to the representation we as POC, in general, deserve.

Want is definitely a book you want to place on your TBR and plan on having Cindy Pon's books blow you away in the near future. Want is released June 13th, 2017!!

this corgi has taken on a mermaids tail and so, I've paired her with of poseidon (even though I haven't read it yet). pretty sure the main character of this book is a mermaid and there's romance involved in-between the waves of the ocean with a human boy. it sounds quite promising and since there aren't an abundance of mermaid novels to choose from, I should pick this one up soon. while reading it, maybe I'll pick up one of those mermaid tails tibby has.

summer of sloane was one of my favorite debuts of 2016. the story was so easy to read and yet so addicting; I fell in love with the characters and the setting (you can read my review for it here if you're interested). this corgi here reminded me of the Hawaiian setting with his floral shirt and laid-back style. I sure wish I was laying in the sand with my best friends and this cute pup by my side.

the darkest minds has a cast of characters is single handedly one of the best squads ever in existence. ruby, liam, zu, and chubs, the four of them save the world and carry each other's weight on their shoulders and I just love them so much. in this picture of corgis, you see seven little ones which I consider a squad equivalent to that of the black betty squad. plus, ruby, liam, zu, and chubs are like puppies anyways, so it works out.

for this corgi with a donut around its nose, I decided to use heartless, just because it was the first book that came to my mind when I thought of baking.

for some reason, the way this corgi's eyes are closed reminds me of the cover of dreamology. if you're looking for a very cute contemporary read with magic realism, this is the perfect book for you. this was, again, one of my favorite debuts of 2016 (they killed it - they really did). I love how calm and precious this corgi looks. I wish I could find this much bliss, but alas, college is love college is life.

I really hope you guys enjoyed this post! Once again, I had so much fun looking for books to pair with these corgis. I find that my google search history is always extremely strange after these posts (I searched up YA books with donuts, so). Thanks for stopping by!!

Synopsis: Sallot Leon is a thief, and a good one at that. But gender fluid Sal wants nothing more than to escape the drudgery of life as a highway robber and get closer to the upper-class―and the nobles who destroyed their home.

When Sal steals a flyer for an audition to become a member of The Left Hand―the Queen's personal assassins, named after the rings she wears―Sal jumps at the chance to infiltrate the court and get revenge.

But the audition is a fight to the death filled with clever circus acrobats, lethal apothecaries, and vicious ex-soldiers. A childhood as a common criminal hardly prepared Sal for the trials. And as Sal succeeds in the competition, and wins the heart of Elise, an intriguing scribe at court, they start to dream of a new life and a different future, but one that Sal can have only if they survive.

I am so incredibly excited for Mask of Shadows. This book features a gender fluid main character, which, quite frankly, I have never ever read about in a YA novel before (if there are more books featuring gender fluid characters, please let me know in the comments below, I'd love to check them out!). This diversity aspect of the book already has me so freakin stoked, but the synopsis also pitches it as perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo. Books that are driven by revenge are honestly my favorite books ever. The passion that drives these characters forward is a force unlike anything you could ever encounter, which makes the book and its story that much more compelling. Also, I love assassins and anything that involves competitions - which I assume is why it is compared to that of SJM. The cover for this book is also wonderfully crafted, I love the intricate design and color scheme. I am ready for this duology to blow me away and potential (probably) crush me.

Mara Dyer and Noah Shaw, aka madness, is my go to couple when people ask me who my favorite OTP is. There is so much dimension to the way these two care for each other. My heart bursts for them. Also, this isn't exactly a romance book, because I remember when I was reading it I was actually scared, but I think the dark themes and mystery of the story really enhance the romantic aspects. You can't help but root for these two to be alright and to end up together, and I just love them. I cannot wait to see what Michelle Hodkin has in store for us in The Shaw Confessions.

Ronan adores Adam so much and will likely do anything to see him smile, and I'm just wrecked. I am beyond happy with how this series ended up and am so excited for us to get our very own Ronan Trilogy. Ronan Lynch is my favorite character ever, so this trilogy will likely be my favorite trilogy ever. I haven't finished AGOS yet, so I don't even know if something terribly horrible happens to either of them, but I only need to read 100 more pages, please bear with me. So far that one little cameo of the two of them is enough to let me know that I need more of it. Hopefully I will finish AGOS in time for A Conjuring of Light to come out (which is right in time for spring break yay!). Anyways, I love these two and really hope they <strike>stay alive</strike> have more scenes together in the next book.

ok The Love That Split The World is one of my favorite books ever. I love everything about it - the characters, the plot, and especially the writing. Emily Henry has become one of my favorite authors in just the span of one book, but I am already so impressed by everything she does. A Million Junes comes out this year, May 16th, and I will literally move the entire world for this book. I've heard amazing things about it thus far and will only continue to push people to read her books. I love Natalie Cleary and Beau Wilkes - they complement each other so well. Their personalities are incredibly meshy and they're so mushy and ah I love this book.

Synopsis: All Etta Spencer wanted was to make her violin debut when she was thrust into a treacherous world where the struggle for power could alter history. After losing the one thing that would have allowed her to protect the Timeline, and the one person worth fighting for, Etta awakens alone in an unknown place and time, exposed to the threat of the two groups who would rather see her dead than succeed. When help arrives, it comes from the last person Etta ever expected—Julian Ironwood, the Grand Master’s heir who has long been presumed dead, and whose dangerous alliance with a man from Etta’s past could put them both at risk.

Meanwhile, Nicholas and Sophia are racing through time in order to locate Etta and the missing astrolabe with Ironwood travelers hot on their trail. But as the three of them attempt to evade their pursuers, Nicholas soon realizes that one of his companions may have ulterior motives.

As Etta and Nicholas fight to make their way back to one another, from Imperial Russia to the Vatican catacombs, time is rapidly shifting and changing into something unrecognizable… and might just run out on both of them.

Wow, I am so impressed by this book. Alexandra Bracken has grown tremendously in her written capabilities. Passenger was my favorite book in 2015, as I read it right after YALLFest, and I was immediately ready to be wrecked by the second book. As I predicted, I was absolutely correct - I was destroyed by this book. Alex has this amazing ability to create luscious depictions of locations around the world and scenery that sticks with you. As much as I was lost in the writing, I was lost in the world of time traveling. I want to experience what these characters can do (without being hunted, of course). Wayfarer has to be the best book Alex has written in terms of rich writing, decadent plot development, and just overall amazing story telling. I've so much respect for the author she has become and cannot fathom the great things she will accomplish in the future. (*Also, maybe slight spoiler alert, because this is a sequel and a lot happens in this book that would probs spoil the first. So I'm gonna try to review it without spoiling anything, but please take caution!!)

For starters, I really want to talk about the plot and themes of this book, because it was totally brilliant. Where Passenger is really focused on infatuation and romance, with some action packed chase scenes and time traveling thrown in there, Wayfarer is the exact opposite. Wayfarer is all about seeking the truth and the light in the darkness, and going out and doing things for yourself that would otherwise not be handed to you. This is a fighting battle, both physically and mentally, with characters who choose their own destiny and their own way of thinking. Everything about this book is exciting, riveting, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I'll tell you right now, it does get confusing if you aren't entirely paying attention to this story. However, I love thought provoking books - and this was exactly that. If you're coming into this book hoping for love, romance, and lots of kissing, you are not going to get that - you're going to get something even more powerful and insightful.

I thought the character development in this book was excellently crafted. Sometimes I find that characters in a sequel lose the essence of their being, but if anything, this whole cast gained an entirely new sense of spirit. Etta Spencer's life changed drastically in the span of a month, but without panicking, she was able to make power through the situation and change her outlook on life as she knew it. Etta is a badass main character - she's artistic, empowering, fearless, and an unapologetic fighter. Nicholas Carter - I love him. He's got an optimistic, persistent attitude, that keeps him ultimately alive. He's strong-willed, has a fighter's heart, and is a great partner in crime, for he has a brilliant mind. Along with them, Sophia, Li Min, and Julian are incredibly well thought out characters. They each have their own dynamic personality that ultimately adds to the story. The way they all work together creates a bigger sense of community and despite differences that peg them against each other, they learn how to overcome their prides and strive for the greater picture. I loved Sophia and Li Min. They are two seriously strong characters who cultivate a spunky and kick-ass connection with each other.

Overall, Alexandra Bracken continues to impress me with her writing and story telling. I look forward to the books she has planned for the future and hope that they bring me just as much pain that all of her past ones have. Wayfarer was an excellent end to this duology and a story I will continue to push people to read. It's an adventure in more ways than one and a thrilling exposition on the concept of time traveling. Much props to Alex, as I'm sure it got hella confusing at times to plot out specific scenes and figuring out where characters ended up in what era, etc. The reason I took a star off is really my fault. College has gotten in the way of my reading and so I would constantly take week long breaks between 100's of pages, resulting in me not really developing a connection to the story and really causing some confusion. I am positive that the next time I reread this (and I sure as hell will) I will develop a stronger connection with the book. As always, I recommend Passenger and Wayfarer to those wishing to take a break from reality. You'll be taken to paths unknown and on an adventure so breathtaking, you'll forget all about what was bothering you in present time.

Hello! For a while now I've been in the mood to start a cute little project. After a lot of thought and testing out different ideas, I've strangely come up with the plan to start relating books to corgis. I've spent weeks cultivating ideas and gathering photos all for these posts in a series I'd like to call Books as Corgis. As strange as this may sound, I wanted to bring something to the table was purely mine, so I decided to just throw two of my favorite things together. Bear with me, this is meant to merely bring a smile to your faces and a little more joy in your days. Without further ado, I would like to present to you all Books as Corgis.

as you can see, fluffy winter corg is enjoying his day out and about in the snow, on a beautiful winter's day. Dash and Lily's Book of Dares is set during christmas time and new years, so it's the perfect winter read, which is why I thought these two were a perfect match. dash finds a red notebook, the challenges ensue, and soon their relationship develops. add a cute snowy corg and this trail of dares would be even better. this cute corg is named haru.

this happy corg was able to find a beautiful cherry blossom tree and spend its day surrounded by its pink flowers. stormdancer's cover reminded me a lot of these flowers, though I'm sure the flowers on the cover are actually lotus flowers and not cherry blossoms. this doggo is named meatball (*cries*).

corgi butts featuring dragon tail. this majestic pupper reminded me a lot of the new dragon-trafficking novel coming out by Jodi Meadows. I'm super excited to see a new dragon book out in the world, as I've had some trouble enjoying dragon books in the past due to their cliche plots etc etc. also, cue dragon tales theme song - this corgi's name is loki.

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue is set in 18th cent. europe. in this photo, our cute little pup, emma, is standing on a hillside of what reminds me of ireland, scotland, etc. immediately I thought of this book which I'm dying for. upon finding a magical artifact, henry and percy are seen all over europe fighting pirates, highwaymen, and their feelings for each other.
